CONTAINS INFORMATION THAT NTLDR READS ON HOW TO LOAD WINDOWS 2000.THE BOOT.INI FILE HAS TWO SECTIONS,BOOT LOADER AND OPERATING SYSTEM.THIS IS THE INFORMATION YOU SEE ON THE BOOTSTRAP LOADER SCREEN,IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE OPERATING SYSTEM.

BOOTSECT.DOS

IF THE NTLDR DETECTS THAT YOU CHOSE TO RUN ANOTHER OPERATING SYSTEM,SUCH AS WINDOWS 9X,IT READS THE BOOTSECT.DOS FILE TO LOCATE THE IO.SYS FILE AND THEN LETS THE OTHER OPERATING SYSTEM START.

WINDOWS 2000 32 BIT COMMAND INTERPRETER.

COMMAND.COM

COMMAND PROCESSOR FOR DOS AND WINDOWS 9X.IT DISPLAYS THE DOS PROMPT AND PROCESSES THE COMMANDS TYPED AT THE COMMAND PROMPT. CONTAINS INTERNAL DOS COMMANDS.

CONFIG.SYS

TEXT FILE THAT CONTROLS CERTAIN ASPECTS OF OPERATING SYSTEM BEHAVIOR.COMMANDS IN THE CONFIG.SYS FILE ENABLE OR DISABLE SYSTEM FEATURES,SET LIMITS ON RESOURCES AND EXTEND OPERATING SYSTEM BY LOADING DEVICE DRIVERS THAT CONTROL HARDWARE SPECIFICS.

EXTRACT.EXE

USED TO REPLACE MISSING OR CORRUPT SYSTEM FILES FROM WINDOWS 9X CD.

USED TO PARTITION THE HARD DRIVE INTO LOGICAL SUBDIVISIONS.

USED TO REPAIR A DAMAGED MASTER BOOT RECORD.OR TO REMOVE A BOOT SECTOR VIRUS.

HIMEM.SYS

DEVICE DRIVER FOR EXTENDED AND HIGH MEMORY.IF IT IS NOT LOADED DURING STARTUP.WINDOWS 9X DISPLAYS AN ERROR MESSAGE AND BOOTS TO A COMMAND PROMPT.

IO.SYS

A BINARY EXECUTABLE FILE LOADED DURING THE BOOT SEQUENCE.IT CONTAINS MANY OF THE COMMANDS AND ACTIONS THAT WERE PREVIOUSLY RUN FROM THE CONFIG.SYS AND AUTOEXEC.BAT FILES IN DOS AND WINDOWS 3X.

NEEDED ONLY IF YOU ARE USING A SCSI CONTROLLED BOOT PARTITION,AND THE SCSI ADAPTER DOES NOT HAVE A SCSI BIOS ENABLED. (WINDOWS 2000)

NTDETECT.COM

DETECTS INSTALLED HARDWARE DURING THE WINDOWS 2000 STARTUP SEQUENCE.IT PASSES THIS INFORMATION TO THE NTLDR AND PLACES A LIST IN THE REGISTRY.

NTLDR

BOOTSTRAP LOADER FOR WINDOWS 2000,WHICH DOES THE FOLLOWING:
1)ENABLES THE USER TO SELECT AN OPERATING SYSTEM TO Start.
